First a little history on Amber and Joe. Mike and I were in the same congregation as Amber when she was in her late teens and getting to the point of getting baptized. She moved her to the Dominican Republic in 2006. She met her husband two years ago and they were married on October 9, 2009. Here is a picture of the two of them:
Joe was born and raised on the island next door - Puerto Rico - he has also lived in the states. He moved here a couple of years ago and attended the MTS school here in 2007 (if I remember correctly). They are both serving as regular pioneers and Joe serves as an Elder. They recently had been asked by the branch to help out the Luperon Spanish Congregation and they saw the need was so great that they decided to move there. The next few pictures are of their house:
This is one street view from their driveway
This is a view in the other direction
This is a street view of their house -the blue tarp on the left is where they park their other vehicle inside - many homes here you will see with the second, third or fourth story not finished - they build as they have money - they will put the walls up since they are cinder block and it will not decay if they are not able to finish the house for a couple of years
Amber's kitchen - simple but has everything you need - a common sight in all kitchen in the DR are propane bottles in the corner and a water dispenser (the gray item on the left of the picture) -
Liviing Room
Another view of Living Room with dining room in rear
This is the electrical panel - the white styrofoam is to keep the water from dripping from the ceiling onto the wires
Joe and Mike with a motorcycle Joe is working on - with gasoline costing over $5 a gallon, most families own at least one motorcycle as an economical way of transportation
Papaya tree in their backyard - most homes (even rentals) have many different kinds of fruit trees in the yards
This is their newly installed hot water showerhead - many homes do not have these so it would mean a cold shower or a warm spounge bath - the water does actually get hot
One evening we went to an little restaurant (Steve's Place) that is owned by an American that has lived here since 1990 - free internet, free swimming pool (which we didn't use and free pool - although the table was just slightly slanted
Amber's washer - a fancy electric version compared to the one I used at my apartment (will share picture and experience later)
Last but not least, Dessie - this is the 14 year old Yorkie that Amber has had for 10 years
Dinner at Steve's Place - bacon cheeseburger or fried chicken dinner for 100 DOP (Dominican Pesos) which equals to a little over $3 in US
Joe is a very creative person - this is what he calls a Dominican A/C - You put ice in the styrofoam container and there is a fan motor at the base of the 90 degree pipe - it will blow cold air out into the room - pretty creative - and I am sure Amber apprciates it on the hot days
